I’m not the biggest Akira fan (freaks me out), but I’ve always wanted to play the elusive SNES/Genesis prototype that’s been rumored for years. That wish came true today, thanks to the gaming preservation group “Hidden Palace”, who dumped the prototype online December 25th.
Akira is super-ambitious for a Sega Genesis title. You get FPS segments, Road Rash-style motorcycle combat, side-scrolling action, top-down, isometric action. The group behind this title were going for a home run here. I complain about unfinished prototypes and their lost potential all the time, but this one falling through the cracks is just heartbreaking.
Black Pearl Software got the mood and feel right too. The Sega-style rendition of the original film’s score is pretty radical. The cyberpunk A E S T H E T I C S are right up my alley here. So much so, It makes me want to revisit the franchise.
Akira’s prototype is the first of it’s kind to be deserving of it’s hype and it’s a real shame this was never finished. Shame on you, THQ for not putting the machine behind this but I’m sure glad we got all those Home Alone and Home Alone 2 games ;_;)
Download the ROM from Hidden Palace
Be aware, this is a prototype. It’s just a little past “playable”. They’re lots of bugs, glitches, passive enemies and all kinds of other junk. Don’t play this expecting a finished product.
